Extend the Distance Between the Philips Hue Controller and the Starter Lightstrip
Do you have a set of kitchen cabinets that you would like to light up with Philips Hue Lightstrips but the power outlet is too far away? Litcessory’s Controller to 6-Pin Adapter
The Controller to 6-Pin Adapter is great for any custom Philips Hue Lightstrip setup where a Litcessory extension cable is placed between the Philips Hue Controller and the first strip of lights, which we call the Starter Lightstrip.
In installations where the controller needs to be placed in a different location than the starter lightstrip (for example, to reach a power outlet) the Controller to 6-Pin Adapter becomes necessary.
Controller to 6-Pin Adapter for Philips Hue
The Controller to 6-Pin Adapter, specifically designed for the Philips Hue Lightstrip system, allows for any 6-Pin Litcessory product or a Philips Hue Extension Lightstrip to be connected directly to a Philips Hue Lightstrip Controller. There are two versions of this adapter, a Hardwired Version and a Detachable Version. You will need to identify which version you need by looking at your controller. You can see a picture of the two versions below.
These adapters solve the issue created by the starter lightstrip either being directly attached to the controller (the Hardwired Version) or the issue created by the controller’s connector size being smaller than any Litcessory product or a Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus Extension (the Detachable Version).
One adapter connects to the controller and the other attaches to the starter lightstrip. Once both adapters are attached, it will provide a 6-pin connection between the controller and the starter lightstrip that can be used to attach any Litcessory product or a Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus Extension.
How to extend the distance between to Philips Hue Controller and the Starter Lightstrip
Lets run through our kitchen example, where the power outlet is too far from the bottom of the cabinet where we would like to start our lightstrip run.
The first step is to identify which Philips Hue Controller we have. In this example, we’ll say we have the detachable version.
Next, detach the starter lightstrip from the controller. Then plug in the power cord and position the controller where you would like it to be. Many people like to hide the controller inside of a cabinet out of eye’s view.
Next, measure the distance between the controller and the spot where you would like to place your starter lightstrip. Let’s say the distance is ten feet.
This will tell you how much extension cable you need. To cover the ten foot gap, our 10 Foot Extension Cable would work perfectly. Since our products are made specifically for the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus, you can confidently connect our extension cables together without any worry about losing brightness or a drop in voltage.
Now that you know which products to use, you can order everything you need and finish your setup. You can begin by plugging in the female mini 6-pin connector on the Controller to 6-Pin Adapter into the controller.
Next, plug the male end of the ten foot extension cable into the Controller to 6-pin adapter.
Then, plug in the male, full sized 6-pin of the second Controller to 6-pin Adapter into the extension cable.
Finally, plug the Starter Lightstrip into the male mini 6-pin on the second Controller to 6-Pin Adapter.
That’s all there is to it! If you have the Hardwired Controller, the idea is the same. You will just need to take a few more easy steps to complete this setup. Mainly, cutting the hardwire between the controller and the Starter Lightstrip and reconnecting the wires to the Controller to 6-Pin Adapter (Hardwired Version).
First, you will need to cut the rounded hardwire midway between the controller and the starter lightstrip, exposing the colored wires inside, about half an inch.
Then you will need to insert each wire into the matching colored connector on the Hardwired Version of the Controller to 6-Pin Adapter.
Finally, make sure to snap down each connector fully to ensure it locks the wire into place.
Once you have your Hardwired Controller to 6-Pin Adapter connected to your controller, your setup should look like the image below.
Now you can plug male end of the extension cable into the Controller to 6-pin Adapter’s female end.
Next, you would follow the same steps as above to attach the second Hardwired Controller to 6-Pin Adapter to the Starter Lightstrip.
Finally, connect the second Controller to 6-Pin Adapter to the extension cable.
